The Strypes

Ok, so I just read a big article about The Strypes in Rolling Stone last week, and I had heard of them before somewhere, but I can't remember where (I think they opened for Arctic Monkeys one time or something), and I thought 'Who are these teenage kids?! Who do they think they are?! Wanna be Jake Buggs, Arctic Monkeys, and mods!?'. But I decided to check them out because all the hype was making me curious, so last week I played "What a Shame" off of their debut album Snapshot. To be honest, I was not that impressed first off, but I listened to it again, and again, and again, and their album a bunch of times. So now I'm kinda obsessed with Snapshot. I just can't stop listening to them, probably for the same reason as everybody else: they're so new, so young, and their sound is kind of cool because you know their just kids trying to be like their idols. These four boys from Ireland, whose ages range from 16 to 18, are trying it out in the music business, and I am kind of surprised that the business is giving them a chance. Their lyrics are a bit dim, rough, and about Irish teen lust, with lyrics like " I reek of sweat and teenage innocence". But I kind of like it that way because it reminds you that a 16 year old wrote them. My favorite song by them is definitely "I Don't Want Know" just because it is so rough and you can tell that it is just a group of teens trying to fit in the world of Brit-rock. It is hard to tell if The Strypes will be around for a while, because they are so young in age, but I think if they stay together and keep doing what they are doing now, with more progression, they could maybe take over Brit-rock one day.
